Bonaparte
CHARLES JOSEPH, American jurist; born in Baltimore, June 9, 1851. He is the grandson of Jerome Bonaparte, King of Westphalia; a graduate of Harvard in the class of 1871, and of its law school three years later.
Since 1874 he has been engaged in the practice of the law in Baltimore, where he soon became prominent in all movements for reform in the affairs of city, State, and nation. He served as a member of the Board of Indian Commissioners from 1902 to 1904, and was Republican Presidential elector and chairman of the National Civil Service Reform League during the latter year. From 1891 to 1901 he was an overseer of Harvwas an overseer of Haryard University. In 1904 he became a trustee of the Catholic University at Washington, and in May, 1905, entered the Cabinet of President Roosevelt as Secretary of the Navy, and was made Attorney-General the following year; serv- (5) Jerome, King of Westphalia, died 1860.
