ALEXANDRE, a French Sept. 28, 1823. His subjects are drawn from the Bible or from poetry and legend, and are almost without exception of a morbid and sensuous character.

Thus from the Bible he takes the repulsive story of "Tamar," and also paints the "Sulamite Listening to the Voice of Her Lover." This latter picture is in the Wolfe collection, Metropolitan Museum of New York many portraits. He died in Paris, Jan.
