Cantwell
JOHN JOSEPH, an American Roman Catholic bishop, born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1874. He was educated at the Sacred Heart College, Crescent, Limerick; and St. Patrick's College, Thurles, Ireland. In 1899 he was ordained priest and in the same year came to the United States, becoming curate in Berkeley, Cal. After holding this office until 1904 he was appointed secretary to the archbishop of San Francisco, and from 1904 to 1914 he was vicar-general of the San Francisco diocese. In the latter year he was consecrated bishop of the diocese of Monterey and Los Angeles, Cal. He was a member of the board of directors of the Extension Society of the University of California.
CANTYRE (kan-tīr), or KINTYRE, a peninsula of Scotland, between the Firth of Clyde and the Atlantic, forming the division of Argyleshire. It is 40 miles long from the Isthmus of Tarbet to the Mull of Cantyre in the S. W., and has an average breadth of about 7 miles.
