GEORGE, an American an author and painter, born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., June 26, 1796. From 1832 till 1839 he traveled and lived among the Indians of America, of whom he painted hundreds of portraits, most of which are now owned by the Federal Government and form the famous Catlin Gallery of the National Museum. He published "Illustrations of the Manners, etc., of the North American Indians," and subsequently, "Life Among the Indians,"
