Cornelian
a cornel cherry (Cornus mas or mascula). It has little clusters of yellow, starry flowers studding its naked branches in early spring. It was formerly cultivated for the sake of its fruit, which is like a small plum. The Turks use it as an ingredient in sherbet.
The fruit and leaves were formerly employed as astringents. It is sometimes called also the male cornel.
