EZRA, an American philanthropist; born in Westchester Landing, N. Y., Jan. 11, 1807. He accumulated a large fortune and is best known as the founder of Cornell University. He began life as a mechanic and miller at Ithaca, N. Y., and subsequently became a contractor for the erection of telegraph lines. He was a member of the State Assembly in 1862-1863 and of the State Senate in 1864-1867. He died in Ithaca, N. Y., Dec. 9, 1874.
