Dalles

THE, a city and the countyseat of Wasco co., Ore.; on the Columbia river, and on the Great Southern railroad, and on the line of the Oregon- Washington Railroad and Navigation Company; 85 miles E. of Portland. It is named after the rapids of the Columbia river near here; is a shipping point for grain, stock, and wool; and has tanneries, foundries, flour mills, canning factories, etc. There is a Catholic seminary for girls, an academy, a Carnegie library, a hospital, and public schools. Pop. (1910 ) 4,880; (1920) 5,807.
