Deodand
a personal chattel, which had been the immediate cause of the death of any person, as if a horse struck his keeper and so killed him, or if a tree fell and killed a passer-by. In these and such cases that which caused the death was to be given to God- that is, forfeited deodorizes; specifically, any substance IZER, one who or that which which has the power or quality of destroying any fetid, infectious, or noxious effluvia, such as chloride of lime, carbolic acid, etc. A drug or pastille applied to, or burned in the presence of, putrescent, purulent, infectious, or fetid matter.
