SIR JAMES, a British scientist. He was born in Scotland in 1842, and was educated at Dollar Academy and Edinburgh University. became assistant to Lord Playfair when Professor of Chemistry at Edinburgh ord He DEWAS University and became president of the Chemical Society in 1897. He has made many discoveries in chemistry and has been a member of the Government Explosive Committee. He was awarded the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society, 1894, and has received medals from scientific societies in many countries. He is F.R.S.; M.A.; LL.D., and p president ent of the British Association. His literary works include: "Collected Papers on Spectroscopy," numerous papers contributed to the proceedings of the Royal Societies of London and Edinburgh, the Royal Institution, the British Association, the Chemical Society, etc.
