Dodge (MARY ELIZABETH MAPES)

MARY ELIZABETH MAPES, an American editor, author, and poet; born in New York City in 1838.

Since 1873 she has been the editor of "St. Nicholas" (magazine), New York.

Her best-known work is "Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates" (1876), which has been translated into five for languages. Among her other works, are: "Irvington Stories" (1864); "Theophilus, and Others" (1876) "Along the Way" (1879) "Donald and Dorothy" (1883) "The Land of Pluck." She died Aug. 22, 1905. foreign
