Dunne (FINLEY PETER an American)

FINLEY PETER, an American writer, born in Chicago in 1867. He was educated in the common schools and served on the staffs of several newspapers in Chicago from 1885 to 1900. He first attracted attention by the publication in the Chicago "Times-Herald" of a series of sketches in which the chief figure was one Martin Dooley. Upon the publication of these sketches in a volume entitled "Mr. Dooley in Peace and in War," his reputation was established. This was followed by "Mr. Dooley in the Hearts of his Countrymen" (1898); "Mr. Dooley's Philosophy" (1900); "Mr. Dooley's Opinions" (1901); "Observations by Mr. Dooley" (1902); and "Mr. Dooley Says" (1910 ). He served as editor for several publications and in 1918-1919 was editor Collier's Weekly. He was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
