Gadsden (JAMES diplomatist born)

JAMES, diplomatist; born in Charleston, S. C., GADSDEN, JAMES, an American May 15, 1788; was graduated at Yale College in 1806; served with distinction in the War of 1812; and afterward took part in the campaign against the Semof that year negotiated the GADSDEN inole Indians. He was appointed minis- PURCHASE (q. v.), which fixed a new ter to Mexico in 1853, and on Dec. 30 boundary between Mexico and the United States. He died in Charleston, S. C., Dec. 25, 1858. a treaty GADSDEN PURCHASE, negotiated Dec. 30, 1853, by James Gads GADSHILL den, by which a tract of 45,000 square miles, now included in the S. part of Arizona and New Mexico, was purchased by the United States from Mexico for the sum of $10,000,000.
