He was born in Ireland age to England, where he was educated in Catholic elementary schools, in which later, in Liverpool and Hull, he was a leader writer on the Newcastle "Chronicle," from which in 1899 he went to join the political staff of the London "Daily GARY Telegraph." In 1905 he became editor of "The Outlook," and in 1908 of "The Observer," writing also, 1912-1915, for the "Pall Mall Gazette." He was originally a strong Parnellite, but on joining "Daily Telegraph" became a Tory Imperialist. Has contributed much to the reviews.
