HORACE, an American jurist; born in Boston, Mass., in 1829; was in 1851; appointed reporter of the Masgraduated at Harvard in 1845, and its sachusetts Supreme Court in 1854, and law school in 1849; admitted to the bar served till 1862; associate-justice of the Massachusetts 'Supreme Court, 1864ford in the United States Supreme Court. 1873, and chief-justice, 1873-1881, when he was appointed successor to Judge Clif- He died in 1902.
