Hamlin (CYRUS an American missionary)

CYRUS, an American missionary; born in Waterford, Me., Jan. following year. From 1860 to 1876 5, 1811; was graduated at Bowdoin College in 1834 and at Bangor Theological lege in 1834 and at Bangor Theological Seminary in 1837; went to Turkey in the fol he was president of Robert College, which he had founded after a long conflict with the Turkish Government. President Hamlin belonged to the group of American educators in the Levant whose HAMLIN influence did much in molding the character of modern Bulgarian leaders, and producing autonomy for Bulgaria. He returned to the United States and became a professor in the Theological Seminary in Bangor; was president of Middlebury College, Vt., in 1880-1885, when he removed to Lexington, Mass.

Part of his works are in the Armenian language; those in English include "Among the Turks" (1877) and "My Life and Times" (1893). He died in 1900.
