Hardee
WILLIAM J., an American military officer; born in Savannah, Ga., Oct. 10, 1815; was graduated at the United States Military Academy in 1838; served with distinction in the Mexican War; in the Civil War entered the Confederate army with the rank of colonel; commanded a corps at Shiloh; promoted to lieutenant-general in 1862; commanded the left wing of the Confederate army at Perryville; defended Savannah against General Sherman in December, 1864. He died in Wytheville, Va., Nov. 6, 1873.
