SIR ARTHUR, an English historian; born in Streatham, Surrey, July 10, 1813 ; was graduated at Cambridge in 1835. His works comprise an early volume of essays: "Thoughts in the Cloister and the Crowd" (1835); "Catherine Douglas, a Tragedy" (1839); "Essays Written During the Intervals of Business Business" (1841) ; "Claims of Labor" ); the series entitled "Friends in Council" (1847-1859); "Companions of My Solitude" (1851); "Brevia" (1871); "Conversations on War" "Thoughts (1871); "Animals and Their Masters" (1873); Government" (1872); "Social Pressure" (1875); "Spanish Conon ville, the Illinois Central, and the Louisville, Henderson and St. Louis railroads: 13 miles S. of Evansville, Ind. It is in a rich timber, coal, and salt region; has regular steamboat connection with Louisville, Memphis, and other points; and ships large quantities of tobacco, corn and grain. It contains coal mines, tobacbuggy works, brick and tile works, cigar co plants, chemical works, carriage and plant , ketchup plant, furniture factory, etc., and owns its own gas plant, electric power plant, water works, municipal park and golf course is adjacent to the city.
