Hexham
a town of England, in Northumberlandshire, on the Tyne, about 20 miles W. from Newcastle. It has ruins of an abbey church, originally a cruciform structure, built about 674, destroyed two centuries later by the Danes, renovated in 1113, and demolished by the Scots in 1296. THE BATTLE OF HEXHAM, fought May 15, 1464, was one of those belonging to the Wars of the Roses. Pop. about 9,000.
