Hildreth
RICHARD, an American historian; born in Deerfield, Mass., June 22, 1807. He first became known as a miscellaneous prose-writer and political journalist. The "History of the United States" is his greatest work, covering the period from the discovery of America to the end of President Monroe's first administration (6 vols. 1849- 1856). Among his other works are: "History of Banks"; "Theory of Morals"; "Theory of Politics"; etc. He went to Italy in 1861 as United States consul, and died in Florence, July 11, 1865.
