SIR SAM, a Canadian public official. He was born in 1853 at Darlington, Ont., and was educated in the public schools and at Toronto University. He was lecturer in English literature in Toronto Collegiate te Institute until 1885, when he purchased the Lindsay "Warder," which he edited till 1897. the bar the same year. In 1916 the Republicans nominated Justice Hughes for the presidency and he resigned from the Supreme Court.
