Humus
a substance which occurs in vegetable mold, and in liquids containing decomposing vegetable matter. Humus as it exists in the soil is a product of a a product of the decay of vegetables. It is a mixture of various carbon compounds, which slowly undergo combustion with the production of carbon dioxide, water, and ammonia, which are again taken up by plants.
