LAURENCE, an American editor; born in New York, Aug. 8, 1843.
Devoting his earlier years to mercantile pursuits, he at length became dramatic critic of the New York "Evening Mail"; literary editor of "Harper's Magazine" (1886-1898). He wrote "Plays and Players"; "Edwin Booth"; "Literary Landmarks"; etc. He made a remarkable collection of death masks of noted people, which he presented to Princeton University.
