Kansas River
a large river, formed by the union of the Smoky Hill Fork and Solomon river, 10 miles W. of Abilene, and so called from the tribe of Indians which once dwelt on its shores.
It flows E., traversing a fertile plain interspersed with wooded hills and bluffs; and joins the Missouri river at Kansas City on the E. border of Kansas.
Its chief affluents are the Republican and Big Blue Rivers. From the source of the Smoky Hill Fork, to the mouth of the Kansas is about 900 miles.
