CHARLES SAMUEL, English illustrator; born in Hornsey, near London, Aug. 10, 1823; was apprenticed at woodticed at wood-engraving at the age of worked for illustrated journals, espe- KEFF cially "Punch" (1851-1891). He illus- George Meredith's "Evan Harrington"; trated Charles Reade's "A Good Fight"; Douglas Jerrold's "Mrs. Caudle's Curtain Lectures"; and received a medal at the Paris Exposition of 1889. He died in London, Jan. 4, 1891.
