Kennebec
a river of Maine, rises in Moosehead Lake, in the W. of the State, and, passing Augusta, runs generally S. to the Atlantic Ocean. Its length is over 150 miles. It is navigable for large vessels to Bath, 12 miles, and for steamers beyond Augusta. In its course it falls 1,000 feet, affording abundant water power. Except for a few miles from its mouth, the river is closed by ice for from three to four months in the year; and many companies are engaged in harvesting and storing the ice.
