PETER RICHARD, an American clergyman; born in Dublin, Ireland, Aug. 17, 1806; ordained priest in the Roman Catholic Church in 1830; came to the United States in 1833; appointed coadjutor to Bishop Rosati, of St. Louis, in 1841, and succeeded to that bishopric in 1843; was created first archbishop of St. Louis in 1847. His publications include "The Holy House of Loretto"; "Anglican Ordinations"; "Vaticana"; etc. He died in St. Louis, Mo., March 4, 1896.
