Khalkas Country

a region in the Chinese empire in the N. part of Mongolia. The surface is mostly mountainous, but there are also vast and fertile plains. In the S. it comprises part of the desert of Gobi. It contains many large lakes. It is divided into four khanats, governed by native chiefs tributary to the Chinese. The inhabitants are Mongol Tartars.
