Kishineff
capital of the former Russian province of Bessarabia, now part of Rumania, on a tributary of the Dneister. It came into the possession of Russia in 1812. Fruit, the vine, and tobacco are grown; and tobacco and flour are manufactured. Kishineff is an important trading center for Bessarabian native products. In 1903 the town was the scene of a massacre of the Jews.
