Lambeth

one of the English metropolitan parliamentary boroughs, S. of the Thames, in the county of Surrey, and forming part of the S. W. quarter of London. Lambeth Palace has been the official residence of the archbishops of Canterbury since 1197. It contains a splendid series of portraits of the archbishops, and a valuable library. The Lollards' Tower dates from 1434. The Lambeth Articles, drawn up in 1595 by Archbishop Whitgift and others, were nine in number, and pronouncedly Calvinistic in doctrine. They were disapproved by Queen Elizabeth, and were never in force.
