ROBERT TODD, an Amercan diplomatist; born in Springfield, Ill., Aug. 1, 1843; eldest son of Abraham Lincoln; was graduated at Harvard College in 1864; served on the staff of General Grant as assistant adjutant-general; was admitted to the bar in 1867; Secretary of War in 1881-1885; minister to Great Britain in 1889-1893; and became presi- of War in 1881-1885; minister to Great dent of the Pullman Palace Car Company in 1897.
