Maris
JAKOB (mä'ris), a Dutch painter; born in The Hague, Aug. 25, 1837. He studied in France, and was one of the greatest modern Dutch painters of landscape and genre. He died in Carlsbad, Aug. 8, 1899. Less famous was his brother MATTHIJS (born 1839; settled in London), a genre a younger brother WILLEM (1844-1910) was a landscapist.
