Mayo (RICHARD SOUTHWELL BOURKE EARL)

RICHARD SOUTHWELL BOURKE, EARL OF, a British statesman; born in Dublin, Ireland, Feb. 21, 1822. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin; entered the House of Commons as a Conservative in 1847, and was appointed chief secretary of Ireland by Lord Derby in 1852, 1858, and 1866. In 1869 he succeeded Lord Lawrence as Viceroy of India. While inspecting the convict settlement at Port Glair on the Andaman Islands, Feb. 8, 1872, he was fatally stabbed by a Punjab fanatic.
