LUDWIG, German chemist; born at Cassel, Hesse-Nassau, in 1839.
He attended Marburg and Heidelberg universities, and after graduating worked in England at a Leblanc soda factory, where he succeeded in experiment to save the calcium sulphide lost in the process of manufacture. After living for a time in Utrecht he started an alkali works in England, developing new methods of making bleaching powder. He gave liberally to the work of promoting chemical research and provided funds for the establishment of the David Faraday Laboratory of the Royal Institution London. He died in 1909.
