Montgomery (RICHARD an Swords Ireland Dec)

RICHARD, an Swords, Ireland, Dec. 2. 1736. He entered the army of Great Britain and was with Wolfe at the taking of Quebec in 1759. On his return to England he resigned his commission and emigrated to America. When the Revolutionary War began he was given command of the MONTGOMERYSHIRE northern Continental forces. He reduced Fort Cherokee, took Montreal and fell Dec. 31, 1775, in attack on Quebec. A monument was erected to his memory in front of St. Paul's Church, New York City.
