Morality
or MORAL PLAY, a sort of allegorical play, embodying moral discourses in praise of virtue and condemnation of vice, the dialogue being carried on by personifications of virtues and abstract qualities. The Devil of the earlier Miracle Plays became the Vice of the latter. Moralities first appeared about the beginning of the reign of Henry VI., and lingered till the reign of Elizabeth (about 1600).
