MOON, TOPOGRAPHY OF. A new theory of the topography of the moon was advanced in 1923 by Colonel John Millis, army engineer and geologist. He rejects the theory that the moon's features could be the product of a volcanic agent and believes that it was formed by the coalescence of masses coming together by mutual gravitation. According to the theory, meteors falling into the moon while the crust was cooling penetrated the surface, throwing up circular ridges, and the holes thus caused have been filled nearly level by molten matter from the interior. As the size of the ball grew, the diameter of the original craters became enlarged and in some cases broken up, thus causing the irregular arcs and mountain chains now visible.
