Mounet-Sully
JEAN, a French tragic actor, born at Bergerac, Feb. 27, 1841. He studied under Bressant in the Conservatoire in 1862, and in 1868 made his début as King Lear at the Odéon, supported by Madame Bernhardt. In 1872 he made a striking success in " Andromaque" at the Théâtre Français, became sociétaire of this theater in 1874, and at the time of his death, in 1916, was the dean of the company. He toured the United States and Europe, and wrote several plays, notably "La vieillesse de Don Juan," in verse, produced at the Odéon in 1906.
