BAY OF (the ancient Crater Sinus), an arm of the Mediterranean, on the W. coast of Italy, extending for about 35 miles from the Capo di Miseno, its N. W. boundary, to the Punta della Campanella, its S. E. limit. It is separated from the open sea by the islands of Procida, Ischia, and Capri. Its shores have for ages been the scene of powerful volcanic agency and the scenery has long been celebrated for its beauty and grandeur. Mount Vesuvius is the most striking and distinctive feature.
