North (SIMON NEWTON DEXTER)

SIMON NEWTON DEXTER, statistician, born in Clinton, N. Y., in 1849, he graduated from Hamilton College in 1869, and from that year till 1886 was managing editor of the Utica "Morning Herald." From 1886 to 1888 he was editor and joint proprietor of the Albany "Express" and then till 1903 was secretary of the National Association of Wool Manufacturers and editor the "Quarterly Bulletin." From of the "Quarterly Bulletin." From 1903 to 1909 he was director of the United States census. He was chairman of the Tariff Commission to Germany in 1906 and president of the American Statistical Association in 1910, in which year he edited the "American Year Book."

His books include: "An American Textile Glossary" and "First Official Pistol Maker of the United States."
