MAJOR SIR WILLIAM, British painter. He was born in Ireland in 1878, and was educated at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and Slade School. He won much prominence as a portrait painter, and in 1918 had a great exhibition of his war pictures, many of which he presented to the government. His painting representing the international delegates at Versailles in 1919 was completed in 1920.
