Palermo
GULF OF ports principally sumach, fruits, wine, manna, and brimstone. Palermo, the ancient Panormus, is first mentioned in history 480 B. C., when the Carthaginians made it a naval station. It was taken by the Romans 254 B. C., and it became one of their principal naval stations. The Normans took it in 1072, and in 1282 it was the scene of the massacre called the "Sicilian Vespers." Palermo was taken by Garibaldi in May, 1860.
