Plea
in English law, that which is pleaded or alleged by a party to an action in support of his demand; in a more restricted sense the answer of the defendant in a cause to the plaintiff's declaration and demand. Pleas are two sorts: dilatory pleas, and pleas to the action. Pleas to the action are such as dispute the very cause of suit.
