Protector
in English history, one who had the care of the kingdom during the minority of the king; a regent; specifically applied to Oliver Cromwell, who took the title of Lord Protector in 1653.
In ecclesiology, a cardinal belonging to one of the more important Catholic nations, who, in Rome, watches over questions affecting his country. There are also cardinal protectors of religious orders, colleges, etc.
