Rodgers (JOHN an American naval officer) (II)

JOHN, an American naval officer; born in Maryland, Aug. 8, 1812.

He entered the naval service in 1828 and soon showed that he had inherited the bravery of his father, Commodore John Rodgers. He was in the war against the Seminole Indians and rendered excellent service during the Civil War. In November, 1861, he took part in the battle of Port Royal, and in November, 1862, he led an attack on Drury's Bluff, on the James river, in which he was repulsed.

He commanded the "Weehawken" in the attack on Fort Sumter, in April, 1863, and in the same year he captured the attack on Fort Sur Sumter, in April, 1863, and in the same year he captured the Confederate ironclad "Atlanta," Savannah. He was promoted rear-ad- miral in 1869, and in 1877-1882 was super- intendent of the United States Naval miral in 1869, and in 1877-1882 was superintendent of the United States Naval Observatory. He died in Washington, D. C., May 5, 1882. near
