He was born at St. Michel de Chabrilwas born at St. Michel de Chabril lanoux, in the Cevennes, in 1858, and was educated at the Faculté de Théologie, Paris, becoming in 1885 vicar of the St.

In 1885 he published the Greek text of the Diit was his "Vie de St. François" which made his name well-known, and the work was translated into several languages. After that appeared: "Collection d'études et des lection d'études et des documents sur l'hisreligieuse du moyen age"; "Speculum Perfectionis seu sancti Assisiensis Legenda Antiquissima, auctore fr. Leone"; "Modernism."
