JOHN WILLIAM, an Ameri. can Roman Catholic archbishop, born in Mobile, Ala., in 1863. He was educated at the Academy of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, in Mobile, Mobile, and took_postgraduate studies in Ireland and in Rome. He was ordained priest in 1888. After serving as missionary in Montgomery, Ala., he became rector of the Cathedral of Mobile, and chancellor of the diocese, in 1891. In 1910, he was appointed coadjutor bishop of San Antonio, Tex., and became bishop of San Antonio in 1911.

In 1918 he became archbishop of New Orleans.
