Shiras
GEORGE, JR., an American jurist, born in Pittsburgh, in 1832. He was educated at Yale University, from which institution he received, besides the degrees of A.B. and LL.B., also the honorary degree of LL.D. D. Admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1856, he practiced law in Pittsburgh until appointed associate justice of the United States Supreme Court in October, 1892, retiring in February, 1913. In 1888 he served as a presidential elector.
