Smith (HERBERT KNOX an American)
HERBERT KNOX, an American lawyer, born at Chester, Mass., in 1869. He was educated at Yale Univer- SMITH sity. He practiced law at Hartford, Conn., from 1895 to 1903 and again beginning with 1912. From 1900 to 1902 he was a member of the Hartford Common Council; from 1903 to 1905 a member of the Connecticut House of Repre HERBERT KNOX SMITH sentatives; from 1903 to 1907 deputy commissioner of corporations, Department of Commerce and Labor; and from 1907 to 1912 commissioner of corporations. In 1912 he was progressive candidate for governor of Connecticut. During the World War he served as a major in the Q. M. C.
