South Bend
a city and county-seat of St. Joseph co., Ind.; on the St. Joseph river, and on the Vandalia, the Michigan Central, the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern, Grand Trunk, the Chicago, Indiana and Southern and the New Jersey, Indiana and Illinois railroads; 88 miles E. of Chicago. It contains the University of Notre Dame, St. Mary's and St. Joseph's Academies (R.
