Stewart (CHARLES erations of against)

CHARLES erations of 1804 against Tripoli and aided in the destruction of the "Philadelphia."

In 1813 he took command of the "Constitution," and in December sailed from Boston on a cruise to the coast of Guiana and the Windward Islands, which resulted in the capture of the British schooner "Picton" and several merchant vessels. A year later he sailed in the same ship on a second cruise, and on Feb. 20, 1815, captured the British ship "Cyane," mounting 34 guns, and the sloop of war "Levant," mounting 21 guns. He commanded a squadron in the Mediterranean in 1816-1820, and in the Pacific in 1821-1823; served on the board of navy commissioners; commanded the home squadron; and had charge of the naval station at Philadelphia. In 1857 he was placed on the retired list, but resumed service in 1859 as commander of the Philadelphia navy yard, and on July 16, 1862, was made rear-admiral on the retired list. He died in Bordentown, N. J., Nov. 7, 1869.
